To help hospitals and government agencies buy the critical supplies, Amazon has set up a new dedicated page for COVID-19 supplies, where applicable buyers can fill out a form to qualify.

“We will not make a profit on this service. We are waiving all standard referral fees for third-party sellers on products supplied for this effort,” the page says. Amazon will fulfill the orders on a first-come, first-served basis.

As concerns regarding coronavirus outbreaks within the United States of America grew, Amazon sellers raised the costs on face masks by four or 5 times what they might have costed a few weeks ago. Sellers have tried creating a profit by tacking on exorbitant shipping prices, generally within in the hundreds of dollars, which is in violation of Amazon’s rules.

Earlier in the outbreak, Amazon suspended accounts of sellers who were attempting to cash in on coronavirus fears by raising the price of items such as face masks and hand sanitiser.

The Seattle-based chain has also said it will hire 100,000 full- and part-time workers across the US, as it tries to meet growing demand from online shoppers who are staying at home during the outbreak.

President Emmanuel Macron from France said on Twitter “We will distribute them to health professionals and to French people infected with the coronavirus”.

Finance Minister ordered France’s consumer and anti-fraud watchdog to open an investigation after reports that prices had doubled or even tripled in France. He stated on Twitter: “I’m ready to regulate prices of masks and gels by decree if the abuses are numerous.”

What is a coronavirus surgical N95 mask?

A surgical N95 mask also referred to as a medical respirator, provides the highest level of protection against the coronavirus. N95 mask is recommended only for use by healthcare personnel (HCP), who need protection from both airborne and fluid hazards (e.g., splashes, sprays). 

In times of shortage, only HCP who are working in a sterile field or who may be exposed to high-velocity splashes, sprays, or splatters of blood or body fluids should wear these respirators, such as inoperative or procedural settings. 

Most healthcare professionals should not need to use surgical N95 respirators and can use non-surgical N95 respirators.
