Facebook is down! - Dispatch Weekly

March 13, 2019 - Reading time: ~1 minute

Wednesday 13th of March has been a difficult day for social media users. Facebook has experienced major blackouts on many of its services. For much of the day Facebook, Messenger and Instagram have all be down with ‘maintenance” being cited as the reason. Questions are being raised as it is reported that the South and South-east of the UK have been most heavily impacted. This seems to be a very odd time for Facebook to be running routine maintenance.

This has raised some speculation into a potential hack of the Facebook systems. There has been a lot of debate in the media lately surrounding the safety of Facebook data. When users were trying to access the social media platform today they were met with the following message.

Rather ironically, thousands of people have taken to Twitter to voice their displeasure of Facebook. Some reports have suggested that this blackout has stretched across the world with thousands of US users also being affected.

Facebook has been under pressure lately surrounding the handling of personal data. Last week, Mark Zuckerberg suggested that Facebook would be moving to a new, safer integrated technology between the various Facebook-owned platforms, however, this has led some to call for the breakup of the powerful social media giant.
